Della Reese most popular in the 90s for her role as Tess in the CBS drama Touched by an Angel has died.
The actress, singer and pastor first launched her career into the world of performing arts through music. Her career was marked with remarkable success as her single Don’t You Know reached No. 1 on the R&B charts and No. 2 on the Pop charts.
Her acting career did even better receiving a Golden Globe nod, 7 consecutive NAACP Image Awards and two Emmy nominations for her role on the celestial series, Touched by an Angel.
Reese announced her retirement from performing in 2014. By this time, she had been an ordained minister and was pastoring her own church Understanding Principles for Better Living aka UP.
Responding to her death CBS put out a statement where they expressed their regrets at losing an “angel”
“For nine years, we were privileged to have Della as part of the CBS family when she delivered encouragement and optimism to millions of viewers as Tess on Touched By An Angel, ” CBS told the outlet. “We will forever cherish her warm embraces and generosity of spirit. She will be greatly missed. Another angel has gotten her wings.”
Co-star of the show Roma Downey had nothing but kind words to say about the actress who she worked with for nine years.
“She was an incredible wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and pastor, as well as an award-winning actress and singer. Through her life and work she touched and inspired the lives of millions of people. “She was a mother to me and I had the privilege of working with her side by side for so many years on ‘Touched by an Angel.’ I know heaven has a brand new angel this day. Della Reese will be forever in our hearts.”
Throughout her lifetime she struggled with a series of health issues one of which was a brain aneurysm, she later had two brain surgeries and was diagnosed with type two diabetes after collapsing on the set of Touched by an Angel.
Reese died peacefully at her home in California. She is survived by her husband Franklin Lett.
