The budget for the ministry of power, works and housing is being scrutinised and questioned by the senate as discrepancies have been spotted including the duplication of items resulting to a total of N16 billion.
The power ministry is asking for N4 million for Kashimbilla transmission and another N12 billion counterpart funding for transmission lines and substation projects both items already listed in the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) budget.
Mustapha Baba Shehuri, minister of state and power was questioned on Monday about the discrepancies as Senator Adamu Aliero who represents Kebbi central tagged the figures as misleading.
“The N4 billion and N12 billion appeared on TCN budget when they came to defend their budget.“Why are you presenting the same now? The figure is misleading,”Aliero said.
Scrutinising the budget, the senator representing Edo central, Clifford Ordia brought the senate’s attention to a budget of N100 million earmarked for transferring office files leading him to ask about the workers in the office.
“I need to understand this thing. Look at the different pages. You earmarked N120 million, N288 million and N480 million for the purchase of vehicles. I do not understand. Are these vehicles different? If you add up this figure, it gives you about N888 million,” he said.
“You also said that you want to spend N100 million on transfer of office files. How do you intend to do that? The people in your office, what have they been doing?
“I can also see from your estimates here that you captured another item for ICT, different from the N100 million for transfer of files. You need to explain these things.”
Chairman of the committee Enyinnaya Abaribe adjourned the meeting asking that Babatunde Fashola appear before the senate at a new date. He also requested a comprehensive list which will be sent to the ministry containing all the issues with the budget.
