Following the announcement of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike which commenced on the 14th of August, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife has said that they will not be joining the strike action.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Eyitope Ogunbodede put out a statement to that effect saying that the university will commence lectures as usual and the academic year will not be disrupted by the ongoing strike.
“OAU is not on strike. As at today, no lecturer has told me that they want to go on strike. We are not participating in any national strike. If they tell me they want to go on strike, then it is a different case, As such, I must have seen that all of my academic staff want to go on strike. In OAU, we have ‘unions’; neither of the two has told me they want to go on strike so we are not joining any strike at all” Mr. Ogunbodede said.
The strike which was supposed to involve all tertiary universities under the union was started to protest unpaid salaries and a failure by the government to honor a Memorandum of Understanding they have with the union.
