Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Mike Okiro has said that Nigeria is not getting the best out of her police force because there are not enough funds to fully run the service.
Speaking to NAN, Okiro said the request for recruitment for more police officers has come due to a need to match the number of police officers to the Nigerian populace.
Okiro also pointed out that a large number of police officers who should be available for the protection of the country are engaged in private service to VIPs and unauthorised personnel.
“The Nigeria Police Force is underfunded and not only in the area of manpower,” he said.
“The issue of funding is very strategic to the Nigeria Police Force. If you want to police Nigeria as it should be, the entire budget of Nigeria cannot be enough for that.”
“We cannot afford to have more than half of the population of the Police in private hands,” he said.
“We could not sustain the enforcement of the order on the withdrawal of policemen attached to unqualified persons in the country because of lack of fund,” he said.
