The Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) group has said that the only yardstick Nigeria can use to determine if the country has finally beaten the terrorist group, Boko Haram is the return of all the Chibok Girls.
Calling the army’s claim of Boko Haram being defeated a distraction, BBOG reminded the country of a statement President Buhari made in his inauguration speech in 2015 where he concluded that Boko Haram was still thriving because the abducted girls had not been returned.
“In his inauguration speech on May 29, 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari stated that ‘. . . we cannot claim to have defeated Boko Haram without rescuing the Chibok girls and all other innocent persons held hostage by insurgents.’
“This is the benchmark for defeating the terrorists as stated by the commander-in-chief himself. Any other claim aside from this is not only dishonest but tends towards insubordination.
“As of today, our 112 #ChibokGirls have been in captivity for 1395 days; 14 Lassa women and two others (including police service personnel) have been in captivity for 235 days; three lecturers of the University of Maiduguri have been in captivity for 194 days under the 965 days of President MuhammaduBuhari’s presidency.
“Our movement once again avers that the propaganda and triumphalism engaged in by the military could be constituting a distraction from the important task of indeed winning the counterinsurgency/counterterrorism effort, returning our #ChibokGirls and others in captivity, and returning peace to the northeast whereby hapless IDPs may return home to start putting their lives together.”
